Trap Back is a mixtape by Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane. Released on February 5, 2012, it follows up his December 2011 Zaytoven collaborative tape The Hood Classics. The tape boasts 19 tracks and includes guest appearances from Jadakiss, 2 Chainz, Rocko, Waka Flocka Flame, Yo Gotti, Future, and Chill Will.
Gucci and his camp intended for Trap Back to be a “comeback mixtape” and his return to form following a string of legal troubles in 2011 and a drop in commercial success. Although Zaytoven was often Gucci’s lead producer on many of his projects and produced a number of songs on the tape, Mike WiLL Made-It was heavily involved in its recording sessions, a first for a Gucci project. DJ Holiday, a frequent collaborator with Gucci, hosted Trap Back.
Trap Back was a major success upon its free release onto mixtape streaming websites, and later was certified 2x Platinum on DatPiff for being downloaded over 500,000 times. It was released alongside Gucci Classics 2, a compilation mixtape. Trap Back received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised it as a return to form for Gucci.
Retrospectively, Trap Back is considered a pivotal release in Gucci’s career, as it kicked off a successful mixtape run that helped rebuild his fanbase before he was incarcerated in September 2013. After the release of its follow-up I’m Up, Gucci received permission from Warner Bros. Records to put his mixtapes on paid streaming services, which helped him remain relevant on music charts. A sequel to Trap Back, titled Trap Back 2, was released on March 15, 2013.
