From DJ Mekalek’s Soundcloud Page: This is the first of the 2 CD series I did with my man Andrew Unknown. When I was in Australia, people were telling me how gospel this CD was and how much better they liked it than the second one (“Ain’t No Love”). I don’t know about that, but this mixtape definitely captures the late-90’s, indie hip-hop scene perfectly, and it’s so much more unrefined and basement than the second one. With exclusives from Percee P, Louis Logic, Apathy, J-Zone, Celph Titled, Non-Prophets, Punchline, All Natural, and even JUICE (!), and more, there’s some crazy shit on here. This is called “The Lost Freestyle Sessions” because we were using a digital 8-track (Platinum Ice!) and mini-discs for everything, and a bunch of stuff got lost at some point. So many stories from recording this mixtape. I remember Andrew, me, and DJ Next driving back from Philly where we met up with Louis Logic to get his verse. We were on Route 95 at like 5 AM Monday morning, it had been raining, and I was trying to study for an exam I had at 9 AM. All of a sudden, Andrew’s whip spun out of control, did a couple of 360’s and stopped short right before we smacked into the highway barrier. That shit happened in slow motion, and I was probably wondering whether a Louis Logic freestyle was worth dying for (no offense, Louis). The things we do for the love of music…
