Blonde (Magazine Version) - Frank Ocean
Blonde (Magazine Version)

In the words of Frank Ocean, Blonde has “two versions.” On August 20, 2016, Ocean released his second studio album Blonde in companion with a 370-page magazine titled Boys Don’t Cry; contained within its center pages, the magazine included a limited-edition CD-R (with MP3 files) of the album that was nearly identical to its streaming release, but notably, with an alternate version of “Nikes,” featuring Japanese rapper KOHH, and an alternate mix of “Pretty Sweet,” excluding the introductory verse present on its streaming edition. On the day of release, Ocean posted a flyer on his website & Tumblr listing the locations of pop-up shops in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and London where Boys Don’t Cry was available free of purchase. The magazine served as a companion piece to Blonde and featured various types of content, including lyrics, poetry & interviews from Ocean & many others. The CD-R with alternate versions of “Nikes” & “Pretty Sweet” was only available with the August 20, 2016, release of Boys Don’t Cry; later reissues of the magazine and physical releases of Blonde contained identical versions of the album’s digital release. On April 7, 2015, Ocean hinted that there would be “two versions” of his upcoming album in a Tumblr post with a photo of two different copies of Boys Don’t Cry magazine and the caption, “I got two versions. I got twooo versions;” he later repeated the same line in the music video for “Nikes,” released on Apple Music alongside the album. Later speculation was that he was referring to his two albums, Endless & Blonde, released within a day of each other on August 19 & 20, 2016.
