Thriller 25 - Michael Jackson
Thriller 25

“… it’s pretty rare to see a reissue loaded with as much contemporary appeal as this one,” MTV said of Thriller 25 under the headline “MICHAEL JACKSON’S THRILLER REISSUE: ALL KILLER, NO FILLER”, and that’s a pretty dead-on description of the re-release of the world’s best-selling album (considering it’s coming from MTV). Released on February 8, 2008 in Australia and Worldwide on February 11, Thriller 25 included the same interviews and additional songs as the 2001 Special Edition did (since discontinued) in the deluxe edition, but also added contemporary remixes of Thriller’s hits, featuring collaborations with will.i.am, Fergie, Kanye West and Akon. “Billie Jean”, “The Girl is Mine”, “P.Y.T.”, “Beat It” and “Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'” were re-recorded, and previous mixes of “Billie Jean” and “Thriller”‘ were included as well. The previously-unreleased “For All Time”, which failed to make Thriller, was added, and “Got the Hots”, which Siedah Garrett rerecorded in 1988, was exclusively available in Japan. “The Girl is Mine 2008” and “Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008” became singles, and in the 16 months between Thriller 25’s release and Michael’s death in June 2009, it added 3 Million album sales to Thriller’s already world-recording 60 Million, which has since jumped to 65M. Alone, Thriller 25 became #1 in 10 countries and reached the Top 10 in 23 others. It was also certified Gold or Platinum in 15 of those regions. It charted at #2 after the King of Pop’s death. Critically, Thriller 25 received positive reviews, but the 5 remixes on the standard edition had a mixed reception.
