Watching Movies With the Sound Off - Mac Miller
Watching Movies With the Sound Off

Watching Movies with the Sound Off is the sophomore studio album by American rapper Mac Miller, released June 18, 2013 through Rostrum Records. Described by Mac as “very introspective and very personal”, the album is noted for its alternative and psychedelic sound and influence, and Mac’s much-improved lyricism. Conceptualized as early as May 2012, the project was developed after Mac relocated from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles later that year to film his MTV series and record new material following the commercial success of his debut album Blue Slide Park (2011). In his newly built home studio, the Sanctuary, Mac frequently worked with films playing silently in the background — a habit that inspired the album’s title. The record continues the vulnerable, psychedelic sound first heard on Macadelic (2012), exploring themes of spirituality, status, substance use, love, and mortality, while still retaining Mac’s sense of humor and flashes of bravado. A recurring bird motif appears throughout the tracklist, lyrics, and instrumentation. The album features an extensive roster of collaborators, including Earl Sweatshirt, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Action Bronson, Jay Electronica, Pharrell Williams, The Alchemist, Clams Casino, and Flying Lotus. Mac also contributes production under his alias Larry Fisherman. Led by the April 2013 single “S.D.S.,” the album was released in standard and deluxe editions. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and helped establish Mac Miller as one of the most promising young artists of his era. Watching Movies with the Sound Off was certified gold by the RIAA on April 26th, 2019. On June 23, 2023, Mac’s estate released a 10th Anniversary edition of the album.
