Paid the Cost - Penthouse Players Clique
Paid the Cost

Paid the Cost, the 1992 debut album by the Penthouse Players Clique is a West Coast classic. The album was produced for the most part by DJ Quik with assitance from Mike “Crazy Neck” Sims known for his work with Above The Law, Hi-C, Michel'le & N.W.A on guitar, Stan “The Guitar Man” Jones known for his work with Bo$$, Coolio, Da Lench Mob, DJ Quik & Volume 10 on bass, Rob “Fonksta” Bacon known for his work with 2nd II None, AMG, DJ Quik, Hi-C & OFTB on keyboards with one track produced by the Penthouse Players Clique themselves and another produced by DJ Battlecat. The album was released on Ruthless Records in association with Priority Records and Eazy-E was the executive producer. The album features the only collaborations between Quik and Eazy—the single “P.S. Phuk U 2” which featured a cameo by Eazy, and an album cut, “Trust No Bitch” that also featured AMG and ultimately become the Clique’s most popular track. Quik feels that the album is a classic, but could have been better had it been produced under better circumstances. In the end, Quik said he was just happy that he had the opportunity to work with Eazy-E, who was one of his influences: It ended up being a classic album, but as far as my standards, I think if there could have been a more comfortable work environment, not so much tension, not too much personal nigga shit. I think that could have been a much bigger record, a much brighter record, and a better-mixed record overall. But the experience, with fucking with Eazy-E? I’ll be smiling in my coffin when I die. That was one of the nicest, smartest, most brilliant, most bright individuals I’ve ever come across. Tweed Cadillac described a different set of circumstances under which the album was recorded: It hurt my feelings in a way, too many gangstas, killaz, and dope dealers were around, but that wasn’t the case. We were living at Hamm’s mother’s house and she was kind enough to leave us a four-bedroom house and go live in a condo to leave us to do what we had to do and Quik was living with us and he was in a safe environment. Quik lived with us in South Central for years and he was protected, for him to say that it was kind of discerning to say the least. Playa Hamm would release a solo album, Layin' Hands in 2001 and Tweed Cadillac would release one of his own, Toast 2 Tha Foolz in 2007, but the duo never reunited for a second Penthouse Player’s Clique album.
