Bon Iver

Bon Iver is a indie folk band created by Justin Vernon. The first Bon Iver songs were recorded in a cabin in Wisconsin for Bon Iver’s debut album For Emma, Forever Ago. The name Bon Iver is a variation of the French phrase “bon hiver”, which translates to good winter. The band’s album Bon Iver, Bon Iver won a Grammy in 2011, and 2016 release 22, A Million was nominated for a Grammy for The Best Alternative Music Album. Bon Iver’s development throughout their discography is unique, as can be seen from their albums and EPs. It started out as a solo project, with For Emma, Forever Ago (representing winter) mainly comprising acoustic and slow songs. After its success, the Blood Bank EP displayed more experimentation and variation in style, later to be found on the band’s self-titled album (representing spring); it featured a wider range of instruments, including electronic ones. 22, A Million (representing summer) is Bon Iver at their most experimental, engaging in folktronica styles. To cap off their seasonal series, the 2019 release i,i (representing fall) blended the previous three albums' styles together with a more optimistic outlook. Following two “Season Five” singles, Bon Iver would return to For Emma, Forever Ago’s style on the bleak SABLE, EP in 2024; it would later be revealed as a precursor to their fifth album SABLE, fABLE, a hopeful counterpart released in the following year that focuses on love and features a pop-oriented sound.
