Chip

Chip
Jahmaal Noel Fyffe (born 26 November 1990), better known as Chipmunk, then simply Chip, is a Tottenham-based grime and hip hop MC, born to Jamaican parents. By age thirteen, he was producing his own CDs. He made his name in the grime scene in the early 2000s, later experimenting with pop music, releasing several successful singles like the UK chart-topping “Oopsy Daisy” from his 2009 debut album I Am Chipmunk. He released his 2011 sophomore album Transition which featured guest appearances by superstars such as Keri Hilson, Trey Songz and Chris Brown – the latter reaching #2 in the UK with their song “Champion”. In 2012, Chip began returning to his grime roots, signing to T.I.’s label Grand Hustle Records and released a mixtape titled London Boy on Christmas Day 2012, getting back to his rapping roots with a new attitude, commenting later: The best thing I’ve done is remove myself from [the music industry]. Yes, I put out music, but I feel like I’m not creating music for the industry. His collaboration “Reload” with Wiley put Chip back in the top 10 for the seventh time. 2015 saw Chip release two extended plays – Believe & Achieve EPisode 1 and EPisode 2, as well as a slew of diss tracks which reestablished his position as a prominent member of the grime scene. Around this time, Chip started beefs with Tinie Tempah, Bugzy Malone and Yungen. On Christmas Day 2015, he released Rap vs. Grime, a mixtape combining new grime songs with freestyles over hip hop instrumentals. In 2016, Chip released a new project entitled Power Up, featuring five singles, and contributions from Kranium, Ice Kid, Jme and Tre Mission among others. 2017’s League Of My Own II featured several fellow British artists like JME and Wiley. The 2019 standalone single “How It Is” saw Chip’s return to the UK top 40 for the first time in six years. The following year, he did it again with “Waze”, the lead single from Insomnia.
